Penn State World Campus is hosting a virtual leadership summit this month and invites students from across the University to attend.
Registration is open now for the 2024 Thrive Student Leadership and Success Summit, which will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on October 29 on the virtual platform Whova.
The registration deadline is October 25.
The summit is designed to engage students and assist in their personal, academic, and leadership development.
Penn State World Campus has offered a leadership conference for its online learners in past years, and this is the first year that students from University Park and other campuses are invited to attend. The expanded invitation and virtual platform will create opportunities for more networking and connection among students and presenters. The event is being organized by Penn State World Campus Student Affairs. This year’s conference offers tracks to give students a chance to take an intentional approach to their skill development.
Students attending this conference can choose sessions from one of three tailored learning tracks:
- Career Development and Readiness: Students can gain vital skills to elevate their career readiness, craft engaging professional narratives from their experiences, establish influential networks, and create inclusive and welcoming work environments.
- Leadership and Inclusive Practices: Students will explore leadership theories and models; enhance skills in communication, conflict resolution, and delegation; promote diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB); and reflect on their own leadership styles to foster growth across various settings and roles.
- Student Success and Well-Being: Students will develop strategies and/or leverage University resources for balancing academic responsibilities with personal commitments, utilize time management techniques, and apply wellness and mindfulness practices to improve their overall well-being and academic performance.
Faculty and staff members from across Penn State will lead the informational sessions.
The event will also feature two keynote speakers, Deo Mwano and Dan Murphy. Mwano runs Deo Mwano Consultancy, which helps organizations navigate issues of culture and the dynamic of working with diverse people. He will open the summit with an address about resilience and empowerment through being and doing.
Murphy is the Penn State director of commonwealth campus support. He will discuss the critical link between setting goals and taking actionable steps to achieve them. Attendees will talk about how true leadership requires not just a vision, but a plan to bring that vision to life.
Penn State World Campus director of Student Affairs Marly Doty invites all University students to this year’s conference.
“We are excited to offer an online leadership development opportunity to any Penn State student through this virtual summit. Our hope is to make this a yearly event for students,” she said. “We look forward to the continued growth of this event.”
Doty said her office is grateful for funding through the Coalition on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (CoDEI) to support the cost of the event.
